The renovation project of Casa M was born from a close dialogue with Takashi, who, having lived there in his youth, expressed precise and decisive requirements to improve its liveability.
The apartment, located in a historic building in the upper town, is characterised by its generous surface area and an internal height of over four metres. A fascinating yet complex context - where it was necessary to optimise the intake of natural light, limited by the narrow streets of the historic centre - and to rethink the internal layout, avoiding the sleeping area overlooking the noisiest streets.
The project develops the living area as a continuous sequence of spaces, eliminating traditional distribution areas. The sleeping area, by contrast, is reduced to the essential, with compact and functional service spaces.
The interiors are organised as a sequence of large, light-filled rooms, connected through calibrated openings that, in relation to the considerable ceiling height, amplify the perception of space. Natural light moves through the rooms and is enhanced by the light tones of the surfaces, resin floors and furnishings.
These contemporary elements are set in dialogue with more tactile materials: honed Piasentina stone, the wood of the restored ceilings and that of the new bespoke furnishings, introducing a warm and material dimension.
The intervention seeks a balance between memory and contemporaneity, recovering, where possible, the original structural patterns and portions of existing frescoes.
After a long design process, marked by discussions, revisions and variations, the client’s final comment was: “Very beautiful, but not at all how I would have done it.”
A truly exceptional client.
