Marco and Nicoletta moved with their large family into a spacious late 19th-century villa - three above-ground levels and a semi-basement - located in a densely built area of the city.
The building stands at the centre of an irregular plot, within an urban fabric that developed around the historic power station: a context originally defined by low volumes set within greenery, progressively densified from the 1960s.
The renovation retains the existing envelope and floor slabs while reconfiguring the internal layout to accommodate new living requirements. The attic is recovered and transformed into a bright, habitable space through the extension of the two terraces, which open new views towards the upper town.
At the core of the project, a new cast-in-place concrete staircase becomes both a structural and spatial element. Contained within a defined structural volume, it contributes to the seismic upgrading of the building while connecting the different levels of the house, opening views towards shared spaces and filtering natural light. It establishes visual continuity across floors, allowing inhabitants to perceive each other’s presence throughout the house.
