Sonia and Maurizio, partners in an award-winning coffee laboratory, chose to open a new tasting space in the Navigli district of Milan — not a bar or a café, but a place conceived as a sensory experience.
Developed in collaboration with Mauro Piantelli, the project responds to a typically Milanese urban condition, establishing a relationship between the public dimension of the street and the more intimate atmosphere of a traditional courtyard building. The intervention is shaped by its intended use and guided by the aesthetic value of the unfinished, where imperfection and incompleteness become part of the architectural language.
Inside, existing materials are preserved and the discontinuity of the plastered surfaces is enhanced through subtle tonal variations. A long counter in iron and charred black timber extends from the entrance towards the inner courtyard, constructing a spatial sequence that accompanies visitors and invites them to slow down, observe and experience the space.
Within the private courtyard, a second environment further develops this narrative. Here, a central iron element is positioned at the heart of a generous, luminous volume, conceived to establish a direct relationship between the preparation and the tasting of coffee.
